Basumati Sahitya Mandir is one of the oldest Publishing House, not in West Bengal but also in India. With the inspiration of Sri sri Ramkrishna Paramhansadev and Swami Vivekananda, The Basumati Sahitya Mandir was established by Late Upendranath Mukherjee in 1881. Huge number of rare and valuable Publication Books, written by eminent erudite persons of the society were being published from this house. Some of the books are Kriyakanda Baridhi, Mahanirban-tantram, Manusanhita, Chhandogya Uponishad, Shankaracharjer Granthabali, Kalidaser Granthabali etc. These books are still available at our Sales Counter as well as at various Book Fairs. Later Weekly, Fortnightly, Monthly Magazines were also begun to publish from this house.
In view of First World War, Dainik Basumati Patrika was begun to Publish from August, 1914 to disseminate the war news to the anxious people.
During the freedom movement of India against the oppression of British Government, Dainik Basumati became the mouthpiece of the freedom fighters. Almost all the freedom fighters, writers and other eminent conscious people of society were associated with this publishing house.
Large number of freedom fighters and spiritual leaders including sri Aurobinda Ghosh, Barin Ghosh, Upendranath Banerjee and others used to meet here frequently to chalk out their strategy to drive out the British Rulers. Mahatma Gandhi, Subhas Chandra Bose and many other National heroes visited this Basumati Bhawan.
During the food movement in 1969 Dainik Basumati under the editorship of Vivekananda Mukherjee had played a heroic role. The demand and circulation of this Patrika had reached at sky high. Kolkata Municipal Corporation has declared the Basumati Bhawan as “Heritage Building”.
At present, with the inspiration of Mamata Banerjee, the Hon’ble the Chief Minister of West Bengal, the management has taken several steps for its overall development and to get back its past glory. Huge number of rare and valuable publication books are being published as Digital Editions. These books are also available from the Basumati Sales Counter as well as at different Book Fairs. Government job printing works are also going on here.
Basumati Sahitya Mandir was established in 1881 by Late Upendra Nath Mukherjee.
There was an Art College in the name of ‘The Society for the Promotion of Industrial Art’. Thereafter, a National College was established in this Building. Sri Aurobindo Ghosh was the Principal of this College. Besides educational purposes, a number of National Leaders were used to assembled here frequently to evolve the plan and program for freedom of our motherland.
Upendra Nath was a closed devotee and disciple of Sri Ramkrishna Paramhansadev. Later he came in closed contact of Swami Vivekananda.
